INFO:

Introduction:

Welcome to the Eastern Puma Research Network new web-site designed by the nationally know Web-master, Robert D. Clites of Cumberland, Maryland. robertclites2005@yahoo.com.

E.P.R.N. was founded in 1983 by John Lutz and the late Anthropologist Dr. R. Pennington Smith of Baltimore, Maryland. Bt the time EPNR was organized the founders had collected such a huge amount of evidence, it left doubts the native big cats called cougers, mountain lion, puma, or black panther continued to survive in the states East of the Mississippi river.

Contrary to what most wildlife officials claimed, Native pumas did countinue to prowl the forest and woodlands of Eastern North America...with their terrifying screams, solitary lifestyles, determined nature and silent movements on the outskirts of towns and small cities across Eastern North America.

They were not to be feared, only admired for their craftiness and determination to survive in the white man's pursuit to rid North America of unwanted predators.

The puma's favorite prey is the whitetail deer, When deer become scarce, they turn their attention to smaller game, such as coyotes, rabbits, raccoon, beavers, squirrels, wooschucks, fish, frogs, snakes and eels. Vary rarely will they attack farmyard or domestic animals, except when injured or aged and can not hunt the fleeter, faster game.

Based on the amount of data collected by Eastern Puma Research Network Field Researchers over the past 40+ years, little doubt remains as to presence of Native Wild cougers, mountain lions, pumas, and black panthers across North America. States most probable with big cats territories are: Pennsylvania, New York Maryland, Wests Virginia and Virginia.

Since 1965 eastern states with the largest number of credible reports are:

Pennsylvania- 1,400+ including 330 Black Panthers.

New York- 900+ including 250 Black Panthers

Maryland- 550+ including 105 Black Panthers.

West Virginia- 485+ including 100 Black Panthers.

Virginia- 300+ including 50 Black Panthers.

Michigan- 275+ including Black Panthers.

Wild cougers, pumas, mountain lions, panthers are "NOT" man eaters. They should be treated as their name inplies, Wild, but they are no more dangerous then any other type of wildlife.
